The layout of Yellow Medicine County spans from the Dakota border to Renville County, and includes rolling grasslands and prairie potholes in the western portion, and the Minnesota River along the Northeastern border. The diversity of landscape also means a diversity of birds. Upper Sioux Agency State Park may very well be the most underestimated State Park for Minnesota birding opportunities.

Just outside Canby, MN on the Western edge of ellow Medicine County, Stone Hill Regional Park offers the largest water body in the County. This popular recreation area offers camping, and hiking trails along wooded, river environment as well as through tallgrass prairie acres. This is one fo the more reliable locations in Yellow Medicine County for diving ducks, and a good location for warblers during migration away from the Minnesota River.

Southwest Minnesota Birding - Yellow Medicine County

A must see area of Yellow Medicine Township, this smattering of wildlife management areas includes prairie grassland birding with several small wetlands and creeks to draw waterfowl, grassland nesting species, and migrating hawks.

Memorial Park - Granite Falls

This neat little park offers some of the same riparian woodland habitat as Upper Sioux Agency State Park, but if time is too limited to go to the State Park, it offers easily managed birding. Camping is also available. Migration is the best season.

Upper Sioux Agency State Park

Southwest Minnesota Birding - Yellow Medicine County

Upper Sioux Agency State Park contains the site of the Upper Sioux or Yellow Medicine Agency. The park was established in 1963 to preserve and interpret the remains of the old Agency site. The park covers 1,280 acres and offers diversity: open prairie knolls, bluffs, and cool, wooded slopes. From the vistas, visitors enjoy the trails which are ideal for birding - especially with the Minnesota River serving as a suitable corridor for migrants.

Drawdown Lakes

Your local Department of Natural Resources (DNR) division of waters may be able to let you know which lake/marsh habitats are scheduled for drawdown. Drawdown wetlands often provide excellent shorebird watching opportunities.
